The thing I love about photographing families and especially children is you never know what to expect. All kids have different personalities and you catch them in different moods which can be a real challenge to photograph at times. I generally have under an hour to get the kids smiling and having a great time and capturing that in a natural and artistic way. I find I usually have a window of around 10-15mins where I need to get the shots I want before they are over it and onto something else.
The thing I am noticing more and more with digital photography so prevalent is that kids from a very young age put on ‘that smile’ which is what they think they should do but always looks fake and forced. The challenging part is making them smile and laugh naturally. They get so many cameras poked in their face and get told to smile that they develop the fake smile.
Below are a few recent shoots I have done which we have managed to get some great fun and natural photographs.
